Leaves…The Very Busy Part of a Plant

LEAVES MANUFACTURE THEIR OWN FOOD FOR THE REST OF THE PLANT,BY TAKING IN THE CARBON DIOXIDE AND RELEASING THE BY-PRODUCT OXYGEN.  THIS ALSO PROMOTES CLEANER AIR. THE VEINS OF THE LEAF, CARRY FOOD TO THE REST OF THE PLANT PROMOTING GROWTH

LEAVES UTILIZE SOME WATER IN THE PROCESS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS; ANY EXCESS MOISTURE IS RELEASED AS A VAPOR.  THIS IN TURN COOLS THE LEAVES AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.  THAT IS WHY IT IS ALWAYS COOLER UNDER A TREE.  IT IS NOT JUST THE SHADE BUT THE RELEASED OF THE WATER VAPORS

LEAVES DECOMPOSE AND PROVIDE MORE NITROGEN/NUTRIENTS FOR THE PLANT TO TAKE UP THROUGH THE ROOTS.

SO NEXT TIME YOU ARE BY A PLANT, SAY THANKS TO THE HARD WORKING LEAF THAT FEEDS THE PLANT AND KEEPS US COOL AND GIVES US CLEAR AIR TO BREATH

Air Filtering Plants

How to increase your clear air in your home

The following list of air filtering plants was complied by NASA as part of a clean air study to assist in cleaning the air in the space stations.  This list of plants will absorb carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen as all plants do, these plants also eliminate significant amount of benzene, formaldehyde and or trichloroethylene

The recommendation is to use 15 to 18 good size houseplants in six to eight inch pots in a 1,800 square foot house that translated to about one plant for every room.

Spring Fertilizer Checklist

Growing season is April through September

Check each plant for these criteria :

  1. How long have you had the plant?
  2. What type of light and water does it receive?
  3. Is the plant in good health?

DO NOT FERTILIZE:

Newly purchased plants, stressed or sick plants, plants that have timed release fertilizer in their soil, or plants with any type of insect problem.

HOW OFTEN AND WHEN:

  • Once per year for plants in low light; two to three applications per season for plants in medium light; three to four applications per season for plants in high light.
  • Apply at the beginning of the growing season
  •  Approx late March to April is the start of the growing season
  • Following the directions on the label of the fertilizer you purchases
  • Keeping in mind the information listed above ,the fertilizer will help improve and replenish the soil.
  • With this in mind a little fertilizer will go a long way to letting you enjoy a healthy and happy plant.

Make sure when you are purchasing a ferilizer, you take in to consideration the types of plants you will be using it on. Indoor plants take different fertilizer than outdoor plants. Flowering plants and citurs have different needs then palms and cacti. So read the labels or ask your garden experts for some advice.

To Prune or Not to Prune?

…That is the question

Pruning keeps plants in a desired shape and removes diseased or unsightly branches. Pruning allows you to remove excessive over-long or misshapen branches, it will also open up the canopy to allow light to penetrate.  Pruning promotes plant health, repairs and rejuvenated a plant

General rule of thumb as to when to prune is just at the beginning of the growing season March, or April depending on the weather.  Keep an eye on the plants you want to prune if you start seeing new growth that is the time to do your pruning.

Pruning Process

Remove all dead and damaged branched.  Cut them off cleanly at the branch collars.  This makes a huge difference.  There is no messy sap with this step because you are removing dead wood

Make clean cuts; Pay attention to where you cut stems.  Any length of stem left above a node will become a dead stub and this is a place where disease can enter the plant.  Make your cut ¼” above the node.  Make your cut at an angle, with the cut sloping down slightly following the natural branch collar.  Also, trim off any sucker growth or branches growing below the main stem branch.

With proper maintenance and pruning, plants will remain healthy,  age gracefully, and retain its fullness.

Jack Frost Came to Arizona

Oh No Jack Frost Came to The Valley!!!!

What to do after the frost and to prevent any more damage:

DO NOT prune frost damaged, woody growth until the plant begins to grow in the spring. That dead woody stuff acts as a protecting against any further frosts. Also, the damage is often not nearly as bad as it initially looks; new growth may come out of tissue that you thought was dead. Only after new growth starts in the spring prune out dead out.

Keep plants well watered. Manage your water carefully, keeping the moisture level as even as possible.

Wrapping trunks of young citrus and other frost sensitive trees is a practical way of preventing serious frost damage to their vital stem area. Multiple layers of weather proof  paper or cloth provide good insulation against cold. Looser wrapping provides better insulation and should extend completely to the ground and at least up to the lower branches of limbs. The wrapping may be left on all winter (mid-November through mid- February). As the days get warmer though you may have to unwrap and re-wrap plants as the frosts come and go, depending on the area you live in.

It’s Getting Sorta Sticky

Care and Watering of Inside Cacti and Succulents

All types of cacti need bright sun light. Usually (here in Arizona) that means the windows facing South are the “Bright” light windows. So you would want to put your cacti or succulents near that window or near a window that get very bright light . They are much happier then.

You can tell the difference between a cactus and a euphorbia or succulent by checking the sap. If the sap runs clear it is a true CACTUS, if the sap is milky or whitish then it is a Euphorbia or Succulent.

An interior cacti or succulent  may only need to be watered one time a month (depending on location and situation), because plants  that are in pots retain moisture longer, when they are inside. This particular type of plant you do not want to have standing in wet soil. Always water the plant thoroughly when it is needed and always let this type of plant dry out completely before watering. During the winter months you should only water cacti or succulents to prevent shrinking and withering. As a note for ALL plants, you should NEVER water any plant with “softened” water.

Hopefully these little hints and helpful information can help your interior cacti and succulents to last longer.

Till the next green idea!

It’s Coming to the Poinsettias Time of Year

The Holidays are fast approaching and that means that it is POINSETTIAS  galore! We just thought that you might like some advice on how to care for these finicky plants. Now for us, Arizonians, poinsettias can not be outside for very long due to the heat of the day, but in many other states they can be outside (as long as it is not freezing).

What Poinsettias like:

  • High light areas
  • let dry approx 2/3 of the way down before watering

What Poinsettias dislike:

  • too dry- sheds yellow leaves
  • too wet- sheds green leaves
  • too cold
  • low light

Words of wisdom to prolong the bloom…keep them a little drier and those beautiful reds, pinks and whites will stay longer.

They are such a festive plants and can make any home feel like the Holidays are here. We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a Fabulous December Holiday.

Cooler Weather has Changes for Plants

I know it does not seem like cooler weather will ever get here, but it is on it way.  Now is the time to start to decrease the amount of water you give your indoor and outdoor plants.

Plants are going into a slow down mode for their growth and will not need as much water as they required during the summer months.

When the evening stay in the low 80’s and high 70’s we need to cut the watering at least in half . You will notice that the plants will stay wetter longer with each watering, this is the sign that you need to decrease the amount you are giving each plant. You will need to be careful not to let your plants dry out completely, so keep an eye on them until yo have the watering down. Your goal is to have your plants looking about the same year around.

Also, we should stop all fertilizing that was being done during the summer months.  The plants are not going to have any growth spurts in the winter months.  No fertilizing will be needed until next April or May.

Remember always keep your plants clean and trimmed all year long.

Bloody Mary Flank Steak and Roasted Sweet Pepers

I was at the grocery store one night and got the urge to buy Guy Fieri Bloody Mary Flank Steak pre-packaged. I do not normally like to buy the pre-marinated meats, as I like to do this my self, I had no clue how I would do that; so why not go ahead and get it.  Well I cooked it up and it was delish. So I looked the recipe up so I could do this myself and I found it no problem.

What you will need for Bloody mary Flank Steak

Guy Fieri Recipe (double the recipe for extra sauce)

10-12 Sweet peppers

1- Fire Wire

1- Cast Iron Sauce Cooker

1- Large Size Flank Steak

Step 1: Make marinade (double recipe) and place flank steak in a dish and cover with marinade for 24-48 hours.

Step 2: After 24-48 hours light your grill and get it up to 500 degrees. While the grill is heating up string your sweet peppers onto the Fire Wire and place the extra sauce into your Cast Iron Sauce Cooker.

Step 3: After your grill is up to 500 degrees take the extra sauce and place it on the grill to reduce down by half. (cook the sauce throughout all the rest of this)

Step 4: Place flank steak onto grill and cook approx 7 minutes on each side (or until cooked to your liking)

Step 5: Remove steak and place peppers onto the grill to cook approx 3-5 minutes on each side or until cooked to your liking.

Step 6: Remove peppers and sauce

Step 7: Cut steak against the bias and serve with peppers and sauce with the cut steak and enjoy.

Always looking for new food and ideas so leave me a comment or a recipe to try.

Salsa Chicken on The Grill

Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!

Have you ever had chicken cooked and grilled in salsa? Well I have, and it was delicious!

Just look at it wouldn’t you want this mmmm good food.

Things used in this Grilling Experience:

2- boneless skinless chicken breasts

1- jar of John Henry’s Juanita’s HOT Salsa (any Chipotle Salsa will do)

1- 5 QT Dutch Oven

Salt, Pepper and Olive Oil

Step 1: Marinade chicken breasts in olive oil, salt and pepper and put in the refrigerator

Step 2: Get you grill up to 500 degrees

(While the grill is heating up put your jar of salsa in the dutch oven)

Step 3: When the grill gets up to temperature take your dutch oven and place it on the grill to heat up the salsa while you put the chicken on the grill cook on either side for 1-2 minutes each, just enough to get grill marks and cook the outside of the chicken.

Step 4: Once the chicken is cooked on outside, take it and place it right into the dutch oven on the grill.

Step 5: Place the lid on the dutch oven and let it cook for 7-8 minutes and then flip the chicken and cook an additional 7-8 minutes (or until cooked all the way through).

(one note: If the salsa starts to cook off add more its not going to hurt the cooking at all)

Step 6: Once the chicken is cooked all the way take out of the dutch oven and ENJOY!

This would be delicious on chipotle chicken tacos. We ate it plain with a side of pasta and it was awesome.

Keep Grilling!

Sittin’ Chicken

Whole chickens are one of the easiest and best slow cooks you can do on a Kamado cooker. Using a Sitting Chicken Stand will make them turn out moist and juicy every time ( a sitting chicken stand is ceramic and it will hold liquid under the chicken).

Season your chicken with your favorite rub, I recommend Butt Rub or Apple Rub from John Henry. To season;do a wet rub by mixing olive oil with your rub of choice. Be sure to rub inside and out of the chicken (including under the skin). Next fill your sitting chicken stand with the liquid of your choice ( I used beer with one and apple juice with the other chicken). Then stand your chicken on the sitting chicken stands and let them set for 1/2-1 hour in the fridge to let the seasoning soak in. while they are resting in the fridge, fire up your grill. The goal is to cook the chickens around 225 degrees until done. I placed my soaked wood chunks around the coals and lit the middle of the charcoal, then I placed my heat deflector plates and grill grates back and only opened the top and bottom vents about 1/2 way. Once I was at 200 degrees I closed my vents down to a “just cracked” position and placed my chickens in to cook. At about 10 minutes after ptting the chickens in the grill was up to about 225 degrees. Thats was the goal and I kept it there for the whole cook. Two whole chickens took about 4 hours. Once I reached a safe cooked tempurature of 185 degrees I pulled them both off and let them sit for about 15 minutes before carving and serving.

“Grilled” Pizza

Pizzas on your Kamado cooker are a very fun and easy project that the whole family can take part in, or a fun evening with friends. So get everyone together and make your own pizzas this weekend. With the following tips you can make your pizza and it will be better than a delivery pizza.

First make the dough.

Here is a good recipe:

Peter Reinhart’s Napoletana Pizza Dough RecipeHeidi notes: Peter’s recipe says the olive (or vegetable oil) is optional. I use it every time – always olive oil, not vegetable oil. I love the moisture and suppleness it adds to the dough, and it makes your hands soft too.

4 1/2 cups (20.25 ounces) unbleached high-gluten, bread, or all-purpose flour, chilled
1 3/4 (.44 ounce) teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon (.11 ounce) instant yeast
1/4 cup (2 ounces) olive oil (optional)
1 3/4 cups (14 ounces) water, ice cold (40°F)
Semolina flour OR cornmeal for dusting

1. Stir together the flour, salt, and instant yeast in a 4-quart bowl (or in the bowl of an electric mixer). With a large metal spoon, stir in the oil and the cold water until the flour is all absorbed (or mix on low speed with the paddle attachment), If you are mixing by hand, repeatedly dip one of your hands or the metal spoon into cold water and use it, much like a dough hook, to work the dough vigorously into a smooth mass while rotating the bowl in a circular motion with the other hand. Reverse the circular motion a few times to develop the gluten further. Do this for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and the ingredients are evenly distributed. If you are using an electric mixer, switch to the dough hook and mix on medium speed for 5 to 7 minutes, or as long as it takes to create a smooth, sticky dough. The dough should clear the sides of the bowl but stick to the bottom of the bowl. If the dough is too wet and doesn’t come off the sides of the bowl, sprinkle in some more flour just until it clears the sides. If it clears the bottom of the bowl, dribble in a tea- spoon or two of cold water. The finished dough will be springy, elastic, and sticky, not just tacky, and register 50 to 55F.

2. Sprinkle flour on the counter and transfer the dough to the counter. Prepare a sheet pan by lining it with baking parchment and misting the parchment with spray oil (or lightly oil the parchment). Using a metal dough scraper, cut the dough into 6 equal pieces (or larger if you are comfortable shaping large pizzas), You can dip the scraper into the water between cuts to keep the dough from sticking to it, Sprinkle flour over the dough. Make sure your hands are dry and then flour them. Lift each piece and gently round it into a ball. If the dough sticks to your hands, dip your hands into the flour again. Transfer the dough balls to the sheet pan, Mist the dough generously with spray oil and slip the pan into a food-grade plastic bag.

3. Put the pan into the refrigerator overnight to rest the dough, or keep for up to 3 days. (Note: If you want to save some of the dough for future baking, you can store the dough balls in a zippered freezer bag. Dip each dough ball into a bowl that has a few tablespoons of oil in it, rolling the dough in the oil, and then put each ball into a separate bag. You can place the bags into the freezer for up to 3 months. Transfer them to the refrigerator the day before you plan to make pizza.)

***from 101cookbook Website***

You may also use pre-made dough as well. It works very well too and if you don’t want all the fuss its easier and fast to use.

Once you have made the dough and decided how many pizzas you are going to make roll out each pizza dough to thedesired size and dress with whatever topping you like on your pizzas. Next prep your kamado cooker. The key to pizza is to have your grill extremely hot (700 degrees is ideal). Light your grill and leave both vents wide open. Place your plate setters in and your pizza stone.

Once you are at 700 degrees lay a little corn meal on the pizza stone (flour won’t work believe me I learned thehard way) and slide your pizzas (one at a time)on to the stone; but be ready it is going to cook very quickly. Using your pizza peal pull the pizza off once it is to your desired done-ness (cheese melted and crust light brown). Now gobble it up and enjoy!

Recommended Item for this cook:

Heat deflector/ Plate setter

Pizza stone

Zamioculas Zamiifolia

Zamioculas Zamiifolia

(also known as a ZZ plant)

Is a great plant for anybody who is looking to start collecting houseplants. It is great because ZZ’s are a very forgiving plant. Meaning even the people without “green thumbs” can handle these plants. If you forget to water them from time to time they won’t (usually) die on you unless they were in very high light. These plants actually do better in medium to low light; as long as you let them dry out between waterings as they are from Africa; they are used to the extreme growing conditions.

ZZ’s have waxy, dark green leaves. They range in sizes from 6″ to 14″ containers. So you can find one to fit anywhere in your house or office. The best part about ZZ’s is they are very resistant to pests (mealy bugs, spider-mites and scale). You can look back at my previous post “Tips for Purchasing Plants” about pests on plants.

A ZZ will make a lovely addition to your home or office space and is perfect for anyone who appreciates plants but doesn’t want a high maintenance one.
